段05｜九個預兆（下）——由「鐵蛇」到「天宮墜落」

據「白羽」（White Feather）1958 年嘅記載，佢講出九個預兆（Nine Signs）：

This is the First Sign: We are told of the coming of the white-skinned men, like Pahana, but not living like Pahana — men who took the land that was not theirs. And men who struck their enemies with thunder.

This is the Second Sign: Our lands will see the coming of spinning wheels filled with voices. In his youth, my father saw this prophecy come true with his eyes — the white men bringing their families in wagons across the prairies.

This is the Third Sign: A strange beast like a buffalo but with great long horns, will overrun the land in large numbers.

This is the Fourth Sign: The land will be crossed by snakes of iron.

This is the Fifth Sign: The land shall be criss-crossed by a giant spider's web.

This is the Sixth Sign: The land shall be criss-crossed with rivers of stone that make pictures in the sun.

This is the Seventh Sign: You will hear of the sea turning black, and many living things dying because of it.

This is the Eighth Sign: You will see many youth, who wear their hair long like my people, come and join the tribal nations, to learn their ways and wisdom.

And this is the Ninth and Last Sign: You will hear of a dwelling-place in the heavens, above the earth, that shall fall with a great crash. It will appear as a blue star. Very soon after this, the ceremonies of my people will cease.

（翻譯：第一預兆——白皮膚嘅人會嚟，佢哋好似白兄弟但唔係咁生活，佢哋攞走唔屬於佢哋嘅地，仲用「雷」攻擊敵人。第二預兆——會見到「載滿聲音嘅旋轉輪」，即篷車。第三預兆——好似水牛但有長角嘅奇怪野獸，即白人嘅長角牛。第四預兆——土地會被「鐵蛇」橫貫，即鐵路。第五預兆——土地會被「巨大蜘蛛網」縱橫交錯，即電線同電話線。第六預兆——土地會被「石頭之河」縱橫，即混凝土公路。第七預兆——海會變黑、好多生物死，即海洋油污。第八預兆——好多留長頭髮好似霍皮人咁嘅年輕人嚟加入部落學嘢，即六十年代嬉皮士運動。第九即最後預兆——會聽到天上一個「住所」墜落，睇落似藍星，之後冇耐霍皮人嘅儀式就會停止。）

白話解說

呢九個預兆係「白羽」版預言最出名嘅部分，亦係最多人覺得「好應驗」嘅部分。逐個拆開睇：

  1. 白人嚟搶地＋用「雷」打敵人。 呢個係指歐洲白人殖民者，用槍炮（雷）征服美洲。
  2. 「載滿聲音嘅旋轉輪」——篷車。 白羽話佢阿爸細個親眼見過，白人拖家帶眷坐篷車橫過草原。
  3. 長角嘅「奇怪野獸」——長角牛（longhorn cattle）。
  4. 「鐵蛇」——鐵路火車。
  5. 「巨型蜘蛛網」——電線同電話線，縱橫交錯蓋滿成個國家。
  6. 「石頭之河，陽光下變出圖畫」——混凝土公路同高速公路，喺太陽底下會出熱浪幻影。
  7. 「海變黑、生物死」——海洋油污洩漏。
  8. 「留長頭髮嘅年輕人加入部落」——六十年代嬉皮士運動，白人青年反叛主流、走去學原住民文化。
  9. 「天上住所墜落，似藍星」——最後預兆。 網上版本註解話係 1979 年墜落嘅美國太空站「天空實驗室」（Skylab），據澳洲目擊者話佢燃燒時呈藍色。呢個預兆之後，霍皮人嘅儀式就會停止。

點解呢啲預兆咁「貼地」？ 你或者會覺得，嘩，呢啲預言又講中鐵路、又講中電線、又講中太空站，好神奇喎。但呢度正正係學者要潑冷水嘅地方。

考證角度（要小心睇）。 作家 Jason Colavito 同學者 Armin Geertz 都指出：呢啲「預兆」係典型嘅「事後預言」——即係事件發生咗之後，先被寫入預言度。鐵路、電話、公路、太空站，全部係二十世紀已經存在嘅嘢，然後「白羽」版記載（1958 年起流傳）將佢哋逐樣安插做「早已預言」嘅徵兆。Geertz 發現霍皮人會「不斷重新創作預言去合理化當時嘅狀況」。所以與其話「好靈」，不如話呢個係一種後見之明嘅敘事技巧。

不過都要公平講句。 呢啲預兆背後，反映咗原住民面對白人入侵、科技橫行、傳統流失嘅真實憂慮。無論「係咪真係古已有之」，佢傳達嘅訊息——科技愈嚟愈發達，但自然同傳統愈嚟愈受破壞——係好真實嘅民間心聲。
